Contraceptive methods have come a long way. We are a long way from the preparations of a mixture of thorns, acacia, dates and honey used on "fiber tampons" placed in the vagina by the ancient Egyptians as a means of contraception.
What is symptothermal method?
Symptothermal method is a method of observing the menstrual cycle and naturally managing fertility based on the observation of 3 fertile signs: cervical mucus, basal temperature and the cervix.
A method that has been based on extensive scientific studies and analyses. It has proven to be highly effective when practiced rigorously, with a 0.4% risk of unplanned pregnancy, an effectiveness comparable to the contraceptive pill and much higher than that of the condom.
How does it work?
As you will have understood, this method is practiced by the daily observation of 3 fertile signals, in order to reinforce the reliability and effectiveness of the method.
Cervical mucus : The vagina secretes secretions that are intended to promote sperm access and pregnancy. It changes in appearance and sensation throughout the cycle.
Indeed, you must have certainly noticed that it is dry, or even absent during your pre-ovulatory phase. Then little by little, it evolves towards a mucus that looks like hummus, that is to say rather opaque, to a stringy and transparent mucus, a bit like an egg white. This evolution indicates the imminent approach of ovulation!
Observing the cervix : This involves observing (with 1 or 2 fingers) the positioning of the cervix, which has the appearance of a smooth mini donut to the touch. When it is low, hard, closed, you are rather in an infertile period, while it will be high, soft, open in a fertile period.
Basal temperature measurement : The temperature should be taken in the morning upon waking at the same time using a two-decimal thermometer that is often found in pharmacies. The temperature in the pre-ovulatory period will be rather low and will reach higher temperatures during the ovulatory phase.
A body-friendly alternative
The aim of the method is to be able to observe one's cycle, differentiate the infertile phase from the fertile phase, in order to respond to the desire to become pregnant or on the contrary to avoid an unwanted pregnancy. Thus, to adopt responsible and caring sexual behavior.
It is also a way to re-appropriate and reconnect with one's body, thanks to a better understanding of the impact of hormonal play on the body, mood, libido, intellectual performance... It's a bit like learning to identify body language.
Finally, it is less invasive and chemical than some other contraceptive methods, since it is only based on the observation of fertile signals, so it represents a gentler, more respectful and natural alternative.
So, whether it is to reconnect with your body, replace the pill or any other hormonal/chemical contraceptive, to get pregnant or avoid an unwanted pregnancy, this method is a great tool that promotes better knowledge of your cycle, your fertility and yourself.
